An open world Star Wars game is currently in development by the studio that has brought us the Division series. Over the last 7 years, EA has had exclusive rights with Disney to develop Star Wars games which hasn’t been the most successful deal thus far.
The deal between EA and Disney was set to last for 10 years which would have ended in 2023. Despite this deal, Disney has decided to move in a different direction by bringing back Lucasfilm games.
With this new deal, it is announced that Ubisoft Massive will be working on the new open world Star Wars game using the same engine that the Division does. According to an article from IGN,
Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot did give a small tease to Wired, saying the game will be “an original Star Wars adventure that is different from anything that has been done before.” Lucasfilm also told Wired that all Star Wars games would continue to be treated as canon alongside the film TV, book, and comic releases.
Lucasfilm Games Sizzle Reel
EA has had their issues with the Star Wars franchise with one of the most notable issues being the microtransaction fiasco with Star Wars Battlefront 2. Ubisoft has developed many rich open world games so it will be interesting to see how they adapt that talent to a new open world Star Wars game.
Open World Star Wars Game Release Date
There is no release date for Ubisoft’s open world Star Wars game. The Ubisoft team has begun hiring for this new game, meaning that it will be a while before we get to see what’s to come from this new IP.
Ubisoft has recently updated their job listings on their website for Star Wars which could give us a hint on what to expect in the future. Check out IGN’s article for more details on that.
