For me, Apex Legends has managed to solve many problems that plague other battle royale games. The shooting is superb, the abilities are balanced and the ping system is nothing short of brilliant. However, when it comes to those pesky little loot boxes, there is always going to a problem for many eager gamers. Even though Respawn has put certain parameters in place when it comes to purchasing loot boxes to ensure that players don’t feel cheated, they still have to find a way to monetize this free game. Among the parameters put in place is a guaranteed legendary item for every 30 loot boxes. Despite this, it took a Reddit user $500 before he was able to get this ultra-rare item.
Legendary items are rare, but apparently, there is one item that is even rarer in Apex Legends. This is the Wraith heirloom pack, that has <1% chance of dropping from a loot box. Within the pack are 3 special customization items for Wraith which include a special quip, new melee item, and a new pose. All of these items are red, instead of the traditional grey, blue, purple or gold items you get from normal apex packs.

If you ask me, these items are nice and I was super excited when I got them, but they aren’t worth the $500 payout a Reddit user by the name of BAE339 spent. In the original Reddit post, he explains how he’s a normal 24-year-old man with a girlfriend and a bachelors degree. Based on his background, he’s a pretty sane dude who has made logical choices thus far. However, when it comes to loot boxes, the logic goes out the window. When there’s an item you so desperately want for your favorite character, you will continue to dig deeper and deeper down into the rabbit hole, afraid to turn back because you feel like the next pack will be the one!
That’s why loot boxes are so controversial, developers prey on people’s lack of discipline and self-control. Apex Legends is a free game, that I’ve put many hours into, so I don’t mind spending a dollar or two to aid in the development. So, at this point, should we be madder at developers or ourselves for the inability to stop purchasing packs.
No judgment here, BAE339, we’ve all been there before.
