An in-depth trailer of We Happy Few was just released by compulsion games and, I must say, I’m pretty excited about it now! If you don’t know what We Happy Few is and why you should also be excited about it, I suggest you watch the trailer and read on.
At first glance, We Happy Few can be seen as a cartoonish horror game, and the art style reminds me a lot of the Bioshock and the Dishonored series, but there is a lot more to it. The We Happy Few populations are categorized into 3 different types of people, downers, joy users, and enforcers. The downers are people who refuse to take the makes-you-happy-all-the-time drug called “joy”. Downers see the world for what it really is, which, for them, is a horrific reality. The city they live in is plagued with rats, sickness, and starvation and they struggle to survive but are willing to suffer out of interest in the drug.
The people who take the joy drug see things in a much different way. Their reality is made up of bright colors, and a carefree world. Basically, the joy drug alters their perception and it distorts reality for them. For example, what a downer see’s as a black rotten apple, a joy user will see as a ripe red one.
The enforcers are like the cops who make you take your joy. If you don’t take it or you miss a dose, they’ll be on you and force you to take it. Now that the introduction is out of the way, let me explain why I’m so excited for We Happy Few.
Stealth
Remember how I said We Happy Few reminds me a bit of Dishonored? Well, I wasn’t just talking about the art style. We Happy Few has a stealth element to the game, which sounds interesting. I don’t know how much of a part the stealth element will play into the game, but the fact that it has stealth kills associated with it raises my excitement for it. From the trailer, we can see the player breaking into a home by picking locks at night. The player then creeps upstairs and greets the sleeping victims with a fluffy white pillow.
Crafting
After watching the trailer, you’ll notice that there is also a crafting element to We Happy Few as well. For those of you who don’t like to go through the stage crouched and taking out enemies one by one, or when stealth isn’t an option there’s crafting. Players will be able to gather resources and take them to the crafting table to enhance and make new weapons. One such example we’ve seen from the gameplay trailer was a cricket bat with metal upgrades and even an electric melee weapon that sends shock waves through enemies when hit.
Upgrades
The trailer also shows off the upgrade tree, where players can upgrade their skills to become a “better you.” The three skill upgrade trees offer upgrades to Stealth, Survival, and Combat. One upgrade the trailer showed off was the ability to parry an opponent and break their weapon, leaving them defenseless before you deliver a devastating strike.
Survival
We Happy Few also offers an element of survival to the game. Players must eat and drink in order to stay alive and keep moving on without their joy. I played the demo before and the survival aspect played a huge role in the mechanics of the game. It’s great to know that there is a skill tree for survival to make your life a bit easier.
In We Happy Few, you’ll play as three separate characters with completely unique stories. There’s even a permadeath feature as well!
We Happy Few is set to release on August 10. If you’re as excited for it as I am for its release, do what I did and get your copy here from Amazon by clicking here.
