Its Clear That Red Dead Redemption 2 Isn’t For Everyone

I’m about 10 hours into the highly anticipated third installment in the Red Dead series and I am in love with this game. Each aspect of Red Dead Redemption 2 has been well thought out to give players that feeling of deep immersion as they explore the blistering deserts and chilling mountains. Red Dead Redemption 2 aims to go against the typical way games have been played as of late. Nowadays, many gamers would rather play quick multiplayer sessions with their friends rather than spending hours playing through an intense story. With Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar boldly takes a stand against fast-paced gaming.

Right from the beginning of Red Dead Redemption 2, you will notice that things move fairly slowly. As Arthur and the gang make their way through the blizzard, you slowly start to gather tidbits about the situation their in. Walking through the snow is slow and methodical and you quickly realize you won’t be able to skip ahead and free roam until Arthur resolves a few issues with the group, mainly finding shelter. From what I’ve played so far, the rest of the game is the same way. Red Dead Redemption 2 is meant to be played in 6 hours sittings if you truly want to enjoy what it has to offer.

Think about it, real life is slow, methodical and precise, which is everything Red Dead aims to achieve when you play as Arthur. Simply taking a bowl of stew or even bathing in the hotel bathroom grants player with additional button prompts to fully complete their desired action. When my buddy did this he was a little annoyed sarcastically saying, “Oh I have to actively eat? That’s nice.” What I thought was cool, my buddy thought was annoying. That’s when I realized that Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t for everyone.

There are times where the slow pace can be frustrating, like when you are walking around your camp slower than 2 miles an hour, or when you have just finished a gun battle and have to loot 30 individual corpses. Whether you like it or not, it’s clear that Rockstar Games achieved what they wanted and they were consistent with its delivery. If you’re looking for a game that you can drop in and out for a quick 30-minute gaming session you will definitely have to look elsewhere. It can take 30 minutes for you to travel from point A to point B, so don’t waste your time.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is undeniably the most realistic game I have ever played. The moment I shot a deer with a bow only to find it alive and in pain a few yards away showed me how much thought was put into this game. I gently approached the screeching deer, took out my knife and landed the final wound before skinning it and putting his corpse onto my horse. You, as the player, are around for every second of the experience. There’s no skipping ahead or looking away. If you want the meat and pelt from the deer, you have to watch the whole process.

Rockstar Games has delivered a masterpiece with Red Dead Redemption 2. If you feel you have the time to invest into this game, by all means, treat yourself with an amazing gaming experience.

  1. I know I’m not bothered. It got perfect 10s just like the last one so then it must be a pretty okay/average game too then. I might get it later but no rush right now to pay full price for it.
