Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner’s Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know

Demon Slayer characters are everywhere on the internet, and if you have not stopped to look twice at least once, I am not sure what you are doing. The slick outfits, the bamboo muzzle, the fancy breathing techniques, and the crisp animation are all things that should have caught your attention by now.

You want to know if it is worth your time? You came to the right place. This is your one-stop shop for everything a newcomer needs to know about the Demon Slayer characters and the world they live in before you hit episode one. By the end of this article, you will know if this show is for you.

What is Demon Slayer?

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 1

Demon Slayer is an anime about a hardworking boy named Tanjiro who came home from a journey to find a gruesome scene of his family slaughtered by a demon. The only survivor is his sister, Nezuko, but there is a catch. She has been turned into a demon herself. Unable to speak and fighting to control her urge to kill, Nezuko battles her own nature while Tanjiro fights to protect the last piece of family he has left. He vows to find a cure, and nothing is going to stop him.

That premise alone should tell you why Demon Slayer swept the nation and became one of the most popular anime of this generation. But the story is only part of it. Demon Slayer boasts some of the most beautifully choreographed fight scenes in anime history, brought to life by Ufotable, the studio behind the series. Every clash between a Demon Slayer and a demon is a visual event. The breathing techniques alone are worth watching the show for.

As Tanjiro and Nezuko travel the land, they come across increasingly powerful demons with unique abilities and demon slayers who each bring their own personality and fighting style to the battlefield. The further you get into the series, the higher the stakes climb and the more invested you become in every single character on the screen.

The Demon Slayer Characters

Tanjiro Kamado

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 2

Tanjiro Kamado is the main protagonist of Demon Slayer and one of the most well-written lead characters in recent anime history. He is a former charcoal seller who becomes a Demon Slayer after the attack on his family. What sets Tanjiro apart from most shonen protagonists is his emotional intelligence. He is not just a fighter. He is a boy who genuinely grieves for the demons he kills, understanding that most of them were once human and suffered before becoming monsters.

His primary fighting style is Water Breathing, a technique he learned from his trainer Sakonji Urokodaki. As the series progresses, he unlocks Hinokami Kagura, a Sun Breathing style passed down through his family line that dramatically increases his power. Tanjiro’s Demon Slayer mark eventually activates, pushing him to a level that rivals the most powerful warriors in the Corps.

His determination, his empathy, and his refusal to give up on Nezuko are the emotional core of the entire series. Without Tanjiro’s character, the story does not work. He earns every victory, and every loss hits hard because of how much he cares.

Nezuko Kamado

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 3

Nezuko Kamado is Tanjiro’s younger sister and one of the most iconic Demon Slayer characters in the franchise. After being transformed into a demon by Muzan Kibutsuji, she becomes something the demon world has never seen before. A demon who refuses to harm humans.

She wears a bamboo muzzle given to her by Giyu Tomioka in the very first episode to prevent her from biting anyone. The muzzle has become one of the most recognizable images in anime. But the bamboo does not deserve the credit for her restraint. That belongs entirely to Nezuko herself. Her willpower, her love for Tanjiro, and her fundamental refusal to become a monster are what keep her humanity intact. For a full breakdown of what the bamboo muzzle means and why Nezuko wears it, check out our dedicated Nezuko bamboo muzzle article.

Nezuko’s Blood Demon Art allows her to produce and manipulate pink demonic flames that are uniquely effective against other demons. As the series progresses, she develops the ability to shrink herself to fit inside a small box that Tanjiro carries on his back, which creates some of the most memorable visual moments in the show. She is a walking symbol of perseverance and love, and her arc is one of the most satisfying in the entire series.

Zenitsu Agatsuma

breathing stykes demon slayer zenitsu

Zenitsu Agatsuma is one of the most entertaining Demon Slayer characters in the show for a very specific reason. He is absolutely terrified of demons. In a series full of fearless warriors, Zenitsu spends most of his screen time crying, complaining, and begging to be left out of danger. And then the moment he falls asleep or loses consciousness, he becomes one of the most lethal fighters in the entire series.

His Thunder Breathing style focuses on a single technique called Thunderclap and Flash that moves at speeds that are nearly impossible to perceive. His body has internalized the technique so completely that it activates automatically even when his conscious mind has shut down from fear. The contrast between his waking personality and his combat ability is one of the funniest and most creative character concepts in anime.

Zenitsu’s relationship with Nezuko is also a running thread throughout the series. His devotion to her is genuine, and his growth from coward to someone willing to fight for what he loves is one of the more rewarding arcs in the show.

Inosuke Hashibira

best breathing styles demon slayer

Inosuke Hashibira is the wildcard of the main Demon Slayer characters. He was raised by boars in the mountains after being abandoned as an infant, which explains both his feral personality and his habit of wearing a boar head as a mask at all times. He has no social skills, no filter, and an overwhelming desire to fight anyone and anything that he perceives as a challenge.

His Beast Breathing style is entirely self-taught and mimics the unpredictable movement of a wild animal. His flexibility allows him to contort his body in ways that make his attacks nearly impossible to read. He dual-wields swords with chipped and jagged blades that he personally damages to create a more tearing effect on demon flesh.

Despite his aggressive exterior, Inosuke’s character development is one of the most genuine in the series. His friendship with Tanjiro slowly draws out a side of him that has never had anyone to care for him, and the moments when that vulnerability breaks through are unexpectedly powerful.

Genya Shinazugawa

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 4

Genya Shinazugawa is one of the more unique Demon Slayer characters because he has no breathing technique. He is the only member of the Demon Slayer Corps who cannot use a breathing style at all. What he can do is consume demon flesh to temporarily gain demonic abilities, making him a wildcard in battle whose power level shifts depending on how much demon flesh he has consumed.

He is the younger brother of Sanemi Shinazugawa, the Wind Hashira, and their complicated and painful relationship is one of the more emotionally layered storylines in the series. Genya’s determination to prove himself despite lacking the fundamental skill that every other Demon Slayer relies on makes him one of the more compelling supporting characters in the cast.

The Hashira: Demon Slayer’s Elite Warriors

The Hashira are the nine most powerful members of the Demon Slayer Corps. Each one has mastered a specific breathing style to a level that no other Demon Slayer has achieved. They serve as the primary line of defense against the Upper Rank demons, the most powerful demons in existence beneath Muzan himself. Becoming a Hashira requires either killing fifty demons or killing a member of the Twelve Kizuki, the demon hierarchy that serves directly under Muzan.

The Hashira are some of the most beloved Demon Slayer characters in the franchise, and each one brings a completely different personality and fighting style to the series.

Giyu Tomioka: Water Hashira

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 5

Giyu Tomioka is the first Demon Slayer character Tanjiro and Nezuko encounter after the attack on their family. He is the Water Hashira and one of the most powerful members of the Corps. He is quiet, reserved, and not particularly warm toward people, but his decision to spare Nezuko in episode one rather than kill her as protocol demands sets the entire story in motion.

His water-breathing techniques are precise and elegant, and his fighting style is characterized by calm efficiency rather than aggression. He later develops an additional form of Water Breathing that no other user has ever achieved. His internal conflict between duty and compassion runs throughout the series, and he develops a close bond with Tanjiro that neither of them would describe as friendship, but clearly is.

For more on Giyu’s role in the series, check out our Rui Demon Slayer article, where his confrontation with one of the most powerful Lower Moon demons is covered in detail.

Shinobu Kocho: Insect Hashira

Shinobu Kocho demon slayer character female

Shinobu Kocho is the Insect Hashira and one of the most distinctive Demon Slayer characters in the series. She is the only Hashira who cannot physically decapitate a demon because she lacks the strength to do so. Instead, she has developed a unique fighting style that injects precise doses of poison directly into demons through her blade, which she has modified to function like a stinger.

She presents a cheerful and playful exterior that masks a profound and deeply personal grief. Her older sister Kanae was killed by an Upper Rank demon, and Shinobu has spent years preparing a method of revenge that requires unimaginable personal sacrifice. Her arc is one of the most emotionally devastating in the series.

Her adoptive younger sister, Kanao Tsuyuri, is also a member of the Demon Slayer Corps. For more on Kanao, check out our dedicated Kanao Tsuyuri article.

Kyojuro Rengoku: Flame Hashira

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 6

Kyojuro Rengoku is the Flame Hashira and the central character of the Mugen Train arc. He is everything a Hashira should be. Powerful, principled, and completely committed to the protection of the people in his care. His personality is loud, enthusiastic, and genuinely warm, making him immediately one of the most lovable characters in the series.

His role in the Mugen Train arc left an impact on audiences that is still discussed years after the film’s release. The Mugen Train movie became the highest-grossing film in Japanese box office history at the time of its release, driven in large part by the emotional response to Rengoku’s story. His Flame Breathing techniques are visually spectacular, and his final battle is one of the most memorable sequences in the franchise.

Tengen Uzui: Sound Hashira

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 7

Tengen Uzui is the Sound Hashira and the central Hashira of the Entertainment District Arc. He is flashy, loud, and completely committed to doing everything in the most extravagant way possible. He describes himself as a flamboyant god of festivals, and he is not wrong. His dual hand axes connected by a chain and his Sound Breathing techniques that allow him to read the rhythm of battle make him one of the most visually dynamic fighters in the series.

He operates alongside his three wives, each of whom is a former Shinobi operative, which adds a layer of tactical depth to how his team functions in the field. His arc in the Entertainment District is one of the most intense in the series, and his opponent is one of the most genuinely terrifying Upper Rank demons in the show.

Mitsuri Kanroji: Love Hashira

Mitsuri Kanroji demon slayer characters female

Mitsuri Kanroji is the Love Hashira and one of the most popular Demon Slayer characters; female fans and male fans alike consistently rank her among their favorites. Her Love Breathing style is unique to her and was developed specifically to match her physical constitution, which includes a muscle density eight times greater than that of a normal human despite her slender appearance.

Her whip sword is one of the most visually creative weapons in the series, and her flexibility, combined with her extraordinary strength, makes her a genuinely dangerous combatant despite her warmhearted and emotionally expressive personality. For a full breakdown of everything you need to know about Mitsuri, check out our dedicated Mitsuri Kanroji article.

Muichiro Tokito: Mist Hashira

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 8

Muichiro Tokito is the Mist Hashira and the youngest of the nine at just fourteen years old. He has a distant and emotionally detached personality that stems from amnesia caused by a traumatic event in his past. Despite his young age, he achieved Hashira status in just two months of training, a feat that speaks to his extraordinary natural talent.

His Mist Breathing techniques are disorienting and unpredictable by design, making it difficult for opponents to anticipate his movements. His arc in the Swordsmith Village is one of the emotional highlights of the third season.

Gyomei Himejima: Stone Hashira

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 9

Gyomei Himejima is the Stone Hashira and is widely considered the most powerful of the nine Hashira. He is a giant of a man who is almost always seen weeping and praying with his prayer beads, which stands in complete contrast to his devastating combat ability. He wields a spiked flail and axe connected by a chain rather than a traditional blade.

His Stone Breathing techniques combine raw physical power with stone-hard endurance, and his presence on the battlefield changes the nature of any fight he enters. Tanjiro and other characters within the series explicitly acknowledge him as the strongest Hashira currently active.

Sanemi Shinazugawa: Wind Hashira

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 10

Sanemi Shinazugawa is the Wind Hashira and one of the most aggressive personalities among the Hashira. He is deeply hostile toward demons as a rule, and his opposition to Nezuko being allowed to accompany Tanjiro creates significant tension in the early Hashira scenes. His Wind Breathing techniques are fast and devastating, and his body is covered in scars that speak to a lifetime of brutal combat.

His complicated relationship with his younger brother Genya is one of the more painful backstories in the series, and the truth behind their estrangement reframes his aggressive exterior in ways that make him significantly more sympathetic.

Obanai Iguro: Serpent Hashira

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 11

Obanai Iguro is the Serpent Hashira and one of the more mysterious Demon Slayer characters among the nine. He is rarely seen without his white snake Kaburamaru wrapped around him, and his heterochromatic eyes and the bandages covering the lower half of his face make him one of the most visually distinctive members of the Corps.

His Serpent Breathing techniques mimic the winding and unpredictable movement of a snake, making his attacks difficult to track. His backstory involves one of the darkest family origins in the series, and his devotion to Mitsuri Kanroji is one of the more quietly emotional threads running through the later arcs.

The Main Villain: Muzan Kibutsuji

Demon Slayer Characters: A Beginner's Guide to the Complete Cast and Everything You Need to Know 12

No breakdown of the Demon Slayer characters is complete without covering the man responsible for all of it. Muzan Kibutsuji is the original demon and the most powerful demon in existence. He created every demon in the series by injecting his blood into humans, which means every demon Tanjiro fights traces back to this single person.

Muzan is one of anime’s most compelling villains because of how completely he defies the typical villain template. He does not monologue. He does not explain himself. He is cold, controlled, and utterly ruthless and the casual ease with which he disposes of demons who disappoint him establishes his power level more effectively than any combat scene could. His obsession with achieving true immortality, including conquering sunlight, the one thing capable of killing him, is what drives the entire final arc of the series.

He is also directly responsible for what happened to Nezuko. Everything Tanjiro is fighting toward leads back to Muzan.
