Father and Son Relationship
Early on, we can see that there is a strain between Chris and his dad. They both deal with the loss of Chris’ mother in completely different ways. Mr. Erickson has clearly not gotten over his wife’s death, and he runs away from those problems rather than facing them head-on. The most obvious remedy for Mr. Erikson’s pain is the use of alcohol. We see him first drink beer when he makes breakfast for his son. On top of drinking beer bright and early, he drinks whiskey from a tall bottle while relaxing on the couch during a basketball game. Upon exploring Mr. Erikson’s room, it’s evident that things are going badly for him. His Wardrobe closet is filled with alcohol addiction brochures and termination letters. We also see a letter from another lady “friend”, as Chris calls it, which shows that Mr. Erikson wants to move on. He wants to put away the thought of his wife and make it through the rest of his life.
Chris, on the other hand, honors his mother in virtually every way he can. We find out that Chris’s mother was an artist and with each picture that Chris draws, it’s an indication of his mother’s special talent. One of Chris’s tasks on his to-do list is to find his buried treasure located in the front yard of his house. Upon discovery of the treasure, Chris opens it up and takes out pictures of his mom. This is what makes The Adventures of Captain Spirit so engaging. We don’t know what happened to his mom, so we continue to play. Each interaction with all the small, seemingly innocuous, items bring us closer to understanding the characters involved.
At the end of the demo, it is evident that Mr. Erikson still hasn’t dealt with the loss of his wife. He goes on a drinking binge and blames Chris for what happened to her. This demo raises a ton of questions as there is still much to be explored.
