Blood of Zeus: A Brutal Tale of Lust, Love, and Revenge

Blood of Zeus is a new anime on Netflix that will satisfy any fan of blood and gore. From the start, Blood of Zeus appears to be about a single character named Heron as we see his struggles of being a bastard child while living in a judgmental society.

Well aware of the battle between Gods and Demons, the civilians are thrown into the midst of a bloody war where many lives will be lost. Standing directly in the middle of this war are two children who have the fate of the entire war in their hands.

Spoiler Warning: This article will contain spoilers about the characters and plot of Blood of Zeus.

Blood of Zeus Plot

In Blood of Zeus, we watch a war between Gods and Demons unfold. If you’re a fan of Greek mythology, you are aware that Zeus is no stranger to adultery. A direct example of Zeus’ affairs is the existence of Hercules, the son of Zeus, and a mortal woman. However, in this tale, we watch as another one of Zeus’ mortal children create a story of their own.

The main protagonist in Blood of Zeus is Heron, a mortal child born from Zeus and Electra. Before Heron was born, Electra was married to the abusive King Periander who took advantage of her. During this same time, Zeus would appear to Electra some nights when her husband was away and disguise himself as her husband. Eventually, Electra found out that she was being courted by Zeus and not her husband, however, they had spent so much time together that she was far from being outraged. This fling that Zeus had with Electra is the cause of all the events that unfold in Blood of Zeus.

Blood of Zeus Hera: A Vengeful Wife

When Hera, Zeus’ wife, finds out that Zeus had been sleeping around with a mortal woman, she vowed to get her revenge. Hera planted the idea to kill Electra’s son into King Periander’s mind while he slept. Sure enough, during Electra’s childbirth, King Periander attempted to kill Heron and keep his own son, but his attempt was stopped by Zeus. Electra and Heron managed to escape, leaving her other son, Seraphim behind to be raised by others.

To keep Heron’s life a secret from Hera, Zeus placed Electra and Heron in a small village and shrouded the town in darkness to keep Hera from finding out. Zeus’ efforts were in vain because Hera eventually finds out and begins her plan to kill both Heron and Electra.

Blood of Zeus Heron: An Angry Son

After Heron is told about the events that took place during his childbirth, he wants nothing to do with his father. Zeus’ fear of Hera finding out about Electra kept him from being a Father to Heron, which made Heron resent him. Although his resentment was strong, events of the demon war pushed Zeus to keep a watchful eye on Heron and advise him from the clouds during battle.

Never doubt the power of an angry wife. Hera manipulates the events that take place on Earth which leads to the death of Electra by her own son, Seraphim, as Heron watches. This leads Heron on a new journey for Heron to find his true power and ultimately stop the demons from taking over Olympus.

Blood of Zeus Seraphim: A Devastating Past

Blood of Zeus: A Brutal Tale of Lust, Love, and Revenge 1

Seraphim is the son of Electra and King Periander and the half-brother of Heron. When he is a child, he is cast out from the palace in which he stayed by his greedy uncle who wanted to keep the throne for himself. From this point on, Seraphim has lived a depressing life.

After being saved from a servant, Seraphim and his newly found mother fled to the woods, where Seraphim became adept at climbing and combat. One day, he is hunted down by the sons of his uncle who attack his home, killing everyone he called family in the process. Just before he is killed by the men, Zeus saves his life and Seraphim escapes. Unfortunately, this encounter left him with a vertical slash on his left eye. A wound that would be there forever.

When he is a young man, Seraphim sought out the man who killed his family in the woods and kills him. This leads to him being chased by guards where he seeks refuge in a cave of a demon. Seraphim eats from the flesh of the demon where he becomes one himself. This is where he also gets the iconic staff he uses in battle during the series. Seeing his potential, Hera recruits Seraphim and uses him as a pawn in her plan for revenge.

Seraphim and Heron then become entangled in a battle of Gods and Demons as they face off against each other in combat. During the events of this battle, Zeus sacrifices himself to save Hera from the Demons who turned on her.

In the end, Heron embraces his father’s words and remains calm as he faces off against Seraphim, giving him the upper hand. At this point, Heron is able to channel his father’s power and uses lightning to strike down his half brother.

Blood of Zeus Review

Blood of Zeus: A Brutal Tale of Lust, Love, and Revenge 2

The main characters mentioned in Blood of Zeus aren’t actual characters in Greek Mythology, which opens up the writers to more elaborate plots. With that being said, this is a solid anime to watch. You won’t be wowed by the combat but there are plenty of moments where things begin to get action-packed.

The story that made up Blood of Zeus was entertaining. The many moments of revenge and unexpected deaths were shocking to watch unfold and we got a lot of different appearances from many of the famous Gods from Greek Mythology.

Animation

The animation style is good but not the typical quality of a five-star anime series. One thing that I noticed was that the character’s mouth and eye-movement were separate. If you can’t think of what I mean just think of Archer and how the characters move on that show.

Where this animated series shines is in its use of over-the-top gore to emphasize the battle scenes. The hack and slash fight scenes added a little extra effect when done tastefully.

Will Blood of Zeus Have A Season 2?

While there isn’t clear evidence that Blood of Zeus will return for a second season, it’s safe to assume that we will see Heron and Seraphim face off again in the future. After Zeus’ supposed death and Hades’ appearance at the end of the last episode, there’s clearly more for the writers to work with.
