We are all aware of the infamous Black Clover Black Bulls. Home to some of the most talented and chaotic mages in the Clover Kingdom, the Black Bulls are living proof that raw potential beats prestige every single time. On paper, they are the worst-ranked squad in the Magic Knights. In practice, they are one of the most entertaining groups in anime and the heart of everything that makes Black Clover worth watching.
Before we break down every member, here is a quick recap of what the Black Bulls actually are.
Black Clover follows Asta, a boy with zero magical ability, in a world where magic is everything. Against all odds, he discovers he can wield Anti-Magic, a power that cancels out all other magic. He joins the Black Bulls, the lowest-ranked Magic Knights squad in the Clover Kingdom, and the story takes off from there. The squad is led by Captain Yami Sukehiro, who recruits based on potential and attitude rather than power or noble bloodline. That philosophy is exactly why the Black Bulls are so compelling — every member is an underdog with something to prove.
5. ASTA – BLACK BULL’S HERO!

Captain Yami doesn’t simply pick his members based on the Magic Knights exam. He handpicks an individual based on their attitude and by judging their potential. Thanks to him, dark days for Black Clover’s Black Bulls were finally over. New missions with new accomplishments were welcomed as soon as Asta joined Black Bulls. Despite the team’s prior poor background, their reputation significantly improved upon Asta’s arrival.
4. A GUILD HOME TO HUMBLE HEROES

One of the other reasons why the Black Clover Black Bulls are an exceptional guild and stand out from the rest is the kind attitude of its members towards common people. Unlike other guilds, which only serve to please the royals, Black Bulls do an honest job of what true heroes are by helping those who are truly in need! This resolve has slowly gained the Black Bulls some admiration from the citizens residing in the Clover Kingdom.
3. A COLOSSAL CASTLE

Another cool fact about Black Bulls is that the bulls reside in the castle! Yes, the big black building you see is one of their best weapons and tools, thanks to Henry’s recombination power skills. Not only do his powers allow the castle to acquire mobility and shift through places as needed, but it also keeps changing the shape of the building, which is why nobody knows what the actual layout of the building is. Also, did I mention the castle is a giant robot? As we witnessed in the battle against the Eye of the Midnight Sun, the castle can transform into a robot with legs and arms, and a bull that can partake in combats!
2. VICE CAPTAIN – A MYSTERY MAN

Black Bulls also brings us a little mystery to keep us intrigued. The guild fosters an important and major character in the anime, the Vice-captain Nacht Faust, whose identity we have yet to learn about in the anime series. Recently, the secrets were uncovered in the manga, so if you’re not too worried about spoilers, you can check out the manga version.
1. THE SMALLEST GUILD

There isn’t much manpower offered in this tiny guild, but these bulls still manage to fight fierce battles effortlessly! It’s the power of unity that the members have among themselves that made the Black Bulls progress so much in such a short time. All the members of the team treat each other like family and always have each other’s backs. This is why, despite being the smallest guild in the anime, Black Bulls have such a prominent presence!
The Black Bulls Members
Yami Sukehiro: Dark Magic

Yami is the captain of the Black Bulls and one of the most powerful mages in the entire series. His Dark Magic allows him to manipulate darkness itself, cutting through dimensions with his katana and overwhelming enemies with raw, destructive force. He uses a ki-sensing ability borrowed from his home country to perceive hidden attacks and opponents before they strike.
What makes Yami so compelling as a captain is that he does not recruit based on test scores or noble bloodlines. He picks people based on their potential and their attitude. Every member of the Black Bulls was chosen because Yami saw something in them that nobody else bothered to look for. That philosophy is the foundation of the entire squad.
Asta: Anti-Magic

Asta is the protagonist of Black Clover and the most unique magic user in the series for a simple reason. He has no magic at all. In a world where mana determines your worth and your future, Asta was born with zero. What he discovered instead was Anti-Magic, a power that lives in his five-leaf grimoire and allows him to nullify any magic he comes into contact with.
He wields multiple Anti-Magic swords that cancel spells on contact. Later in the series, he forms a contract with a devil named Liebe, sharing power equally and unlocking even greater Anti-Magic capabilities. Asta compensates for his lack of mana with extraordinary physical conditioning and relentless determination that borders on unreasonable.
Noelle Silva: Water Magic

Noelle is royalty from the Silva family, one of the most prestigious noble houses in the Clover Kingdom. She joins the Black Bulls because her own family rejected her after she struggled to control her magic as a child. What starts as uncontrollable water bursts develops into one of the most powerful offensive and defensive magic styles in the series.
Her signature technique, Valkyrie Armor, covers her in water that acts as both protection and a combat enhancement. By the later arcs, she is one of the strongest members of the squad, and her growth from insecure noble reject to confident warrior is one of the best character arcs in Black Clover.
Vanessa Enoteca: Thread Magic

Vanessa is a witch from the Witch’s Forest who was imprisoned by the Witch Queen after her thread magic showed exceptional promise. Captain Yami freed her, and she has been a Black Bull ever since. Her thread magic allows her to control and manipulate threads for both offense and defense.
Her most powerful ability is the Red Thread of Fate, which manifests as a small red cat that can literally alter the outcome of events during battle. As long as the cat is active, negative outcomes can be redirected. It is essentially a get out of trouble free card in combat situations and one of the most creative magic abilities in the series. There is a separate full breakdown of Vanessa on Gritty Gamer if you want to dive deeper into her character.
Luck Voltia: Lightning Magic

Luck is one of the more unhinged members of the Black Bulls in the best possible way. He joined the squad partly because his battle obsession made him an outcast everywhere else. His Lightning Magic gives him exceptional speed and the ability to use electricity both offensively as projectiles and to enhance his own physical attributes in combat.
After training in the Heart Kingdom, he learns to conjure and manipulate natural lightning, adding a significant power boost to an already dangerous fighter. Luck is at his best in one-on-one combat, and his relentless, aggressive style makes him one of the squad’s most reliable frontline fighters.
Magna Swing: Fire Magic
Magna is a former street thug from a poor village who worked his way into the Magic Knights through sheer determination. His Fire Magic produces powerful fire spells that he fires like projectiles, making him an effective mid to long-range combatant.
He is one of the lower mana members of the squad, which limits his staying power in extended fights. But what he lacks in mana reserves, he makes up for in creativity and guts. His fight against Dante during the Dark Triad arc is one of the most memorable moments in the series and showed that Magna is far more dangerous than his power level suggests when he has enough time to prepare.
Gauche Adlai: Mirror Magic
Gauche is a former noble who ended up in prison before Yami recruited him. His Magic allows him to create and control mirrors, reflecting attacks back at opponents and shooting devastating light beams. He can also create multiple copies of himself or others using his mirrors, making him a genuine threat in both offense and defense.
He has a magic tool implanted in his eye that amplifies his spells further. His running character trait is an almost comical obsession with his younger sister Marie, but underneath that, he is one of the more technically skilled fighters in the squad.
Finral Roulacase — Spatial Magic
Finral is the squad’s mobility specialist. His Spatial Magic allows him to create portals that teleport himself and his allies anywhere within his line of sight. He has no offensive capabilities on his own, but his value as a support mage is enormous. Combined with other members’ magic, particularly Vanessa’s threads and Asta’s Anti-Magic, Finral can create combat situations that would be impossible without him.
He comes from a noble family but was cast aside in favor of his more powerful younger brother. His arc throughout the series is about proving his worth despite having support magic in a world that values raw, destructive power.
Charmy Pappitson: Cotton Magic
Charmy appears to be a small, sleepy girl whose primary concerns are food and sleep. This is somewhat accurate and also wildly misleading. Her Cotton Magic allows her to create massive wool constructs for attack and defense. She also has food-based magic that allows her to restore mana to her allies by feeding them.
What nobody expects is her true power. Charmy is half dwarf, which unlocks a completely different magic type when pushed to her limits. Her power ceiling is significantly higher than her cheerful surface-level personality suggests, and she has pulled off some genuinely shocking moments in the series.
Grey: Transformation Magic
Grey is one of the more mysterious members of the Black Bulls. She presents as a large, intimidating figure, but is actually a tiny girl with severe shyness who uses her magic to hide her appearance constantly. Her Transformation Magic allows her to take on the appearance of anyone or anything she chooses.
Her true power is Transmutation Magic, which allows her to disassemble and reassemble matter on a molecular level. She can transform spells into something else entirely, change objects and materials, and even heal wounds by transmuting damaged tissue back to health. Grey is one of the most underrated members of the squad.
Gordon Agrippa: Poison Magic
Gordon is the squad’s quietly unsettling poison specialist. He mutters to himself constantly and is difficult to understand, which makes him come across as strange to most people. His Poison Magic creates toxic substances that can incapacitate enemies through area denial and gradual attrition.
His family has a long history with curse magic, and Gordon uses that background creatively in combat. He is not the strongest Black Bull, but his magic is uniquely suited for situations where other members’ direct power approaches would be less effective.
Henry Legolant: Recombination Magic
Henry is the secret resident of the Black Bulls headquarters, whom most members did not even know existed for a long time. He was born with an illness that causes him to drain the magical energy of anyone nearby, which made normal human contact impossible for most of his life.
His Recombination Magic allows him to take objects and reshape them into any configuration he can visualize. The most dramatic demonstration of this is when he transforms the entire Black Bulls headquarters into a massive mechanical bull that walks and fights. Later, he creates the Ultra Raging Bull, a construct powerful enough to briefly trade blows with one of the series’ strongest villains.
Zora Ideale: Trap Magic
Zora is one of the more cynical and contrarian members of the squad. His father was the first ever peasant to become a Magic Knight and was subsequently betrayed and killed by noble Magic Knights who resented his presence. Zora became a vigilante hunting corrupt Magic Knights before Yami brought him into the fold.
His Trap Magic specializes in setting up magical traps that use an opponent’s own power against them. This means Zora can defeat enemies who are significantly more powerful than him if he has enough time to prepare the battlefield. His fighting style is entirely about outsmarting opponents rather than overpowering them.
Nacht Faust: Shadow Magic
Nacht is the Vice Captain of the Black Bulls and one of the most powerful members of the squad. He was largely absent during the early part of the series, and his existence was a mystery to most members. His Shadow Magic allows him to travel through and manipulate shadows, making him an exceptional infiltration and assassination specialist.
What makes Nacht truly dangerous is that he hosts four mid-ranking devils simultaneously. He can summon them to fight independently or merge with them to dramatically enhance his own abilities. His combination of Shadow Magic and devil enhancement makes him one of the most versatile and lethal fighters in the Clover Kingdom.
Secre Swallowtail: Sealing Magic
Secre is one of the oldest characters in the series, despite appearing as a small bird called Nero for most of the early story. She served as attendant to the first Wizard King centuries ago and sealed herself into a bird form using her own magic after his death.
Her Sealing Magic allows her to seal and unseal virtually anything, including wounds, objects, and magical abilities. She can also unseal things that have been locked away, which becomes critically important in the series’ larger plot involving ancient magic and sealed demons.
Why the Black Bulls Are the Best Squad in Black Clover
Every other Magic Knights squad recruits based on power levels, noble bloodlines, and test performance. Yami recruits based on potential and character. The result is a squad full of people who have been overlooked, rejected, or underestimated by every other institution they encountered.
That is what makes them so compelling to watch. The Black Bulls do not win because they are the strongest squad on paper. They win because they trust each other completely and fight for each other in ways that more prestigious squads simply do not. The chaotic family dynamic is not a weakness. It is their greatest strength.
