Unraveling the Symbolism: The Significance of Nezuko Bamboo Muzzle in Demon Slayer

Demon Slayer is undoubtedly one of the most critically acclaimed anime of all time. It creates a broad line between new and old anime series, as it fits in very well in all aspects. The fanbase of Demon Slayer is always loyal and always eagerly awaits the arrival of new seasons.

Not only did  Demon Slayer stick to its original plot, but the characters have played a vital role in the series. Fans are in love with the characters of Demon Slayer, and who can forget fans falling in love with Nezuko when she was first introduced in the first season?

With her cute face, pink eyes, and beautiful kimono, she has wowed many fans worldwide. But her looks are incomplete if we ignored the infamous Nezuko bamboo muzzle, which she always puts in her mouth. It’s Nezuko’s official mark to identify herself, and it’s something that makes her unique from the rest of the characters in the series.

But did you ever wonder? Why does she carry bamboo muzzles all the time in her mouth?

Why Does Nezuko Have Bamboo In Her Mouth?

Well, the idea is very simple; it’s basically to control Nezuko’s demonic cravings. As she was turned into a demon, she wanted to eat humans, which is natural because demons eat humans. But to stop her from doing so, Giyuu (our silent killer) Water Hashira had decided to put a bamboo muzzle in her mouth to stop her from biting herself or anyone else intentionally or accidentally.

In the first episode, it was showcased that Tanjiro was our main protagonist. After coming back to his home, he saw massive bloodshed among his family, and the only survivor of the incident was Nezuko, who was turned into a demon. She tries to attack Tanjiro, but ultimately she gets a sudden realization and starts protecting Tanjiro rather than harming him.

Who Gave Nezuko The Bamboo Muzzle?

Later, Giyuu puts a bamboo muzzle in her mouth to cover her fangs, which makes her look less demonic, and he doesn’t kill her at the request of Tanjiro because she is the only one left in his family.

There are many more significant things, which prove why Nezuko has a bamboo muzzle in her mouth all the time. One is that Master Sakonji Ukurodaki, the master of Tanjiro and Giyuu, took an oath stating that if Nezuko kills any human, Tanjiro has to kill his sister and kill himself as well. Later on, he added that Sakonji Ukurodaki and Giyuu will also kill themselves if Nezuko kills any human.

Why Nezuko Won’t Eat Humans

Although the bamboo helps restrain her demonic hunger, it does not possess any supernatural power to eliminate her demonic urge to have human flesh completely. The credit for that remarkable ability goes to Nezuko’s unwavering will, which cannot be separated from her by nature., Also, sensei Urodokai’s attempts to hypnotize Nezuko, made her see all humans as her own family( like her brother and sister), which further, contribute to her resilience against her demonic nature.

Due to so many reasons, even though fans eagerly wait to see if Nezuko will talk in the series, it is not shown anywhere that Nezuko is talking or saying anything to control her demonic urge to kill humans and eat them to blend with humans and protect them as a family.

Nezuko is also considered to be a peacemaker between demons and humans, as she creates hope for every human, especially in the minds of Hashira, that demons can also be changed in the future.
