The Final Fantasy 7 Remake Demo was released 2 days ago and it has already received rave reviews from the community on PlayStation 4. Today I got to dive in and experience everything for myself, and I must say, I was impressed with everything Final Fantasy 7 remake had to offer.
As someone who has never played a Final Fantasy game, I am completely unbiased by what Square Enix has done in the past with this hit franchise. I say this because I know that there are many people who are in the same shoes and are seeking a review that isn’t influenced by the nostalgia of previous Final Fantasy games.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Graphics
I’m big on graphics and I can’t stress enough how much I analyze the graphics when I play games. Let’s just say that Final Fantasy 7 remake satisfied my need for polished graphics and gameplay.
Right from the opening scene, you are given a few up-close shots of the meticulously polished characters that make up the Final Fantasy world. I know that this may seem like an exaggeration, but meticulous is the best word to describe the design. At one point, I got an up-close shot of Cloud and as he gazed around the room, his hair bounced and pupils moved in perfect physics. This may not seem like a big deal, but this stresses the amount detail Square Enix put into this remake.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake vs PS1 Visual Comparison
Do me a favor and take a second to appreciate the growth in technology between the original Final Fantasy 7 and the remake. The original was made in 1995 and the remake in 2020, so there is a 15-year difference between the two. Feeling old yet? Me too!
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Turn-Based Combat
While there is a “Classic” setting for the remake where you can play turn-based combat like in the original, they have also incorporated a normal combat mode, which is the way I played my demo. I like to describe the combat style as a devil may cry and dark souls hybrid.
I say this because you have to be a bit cautious with your combat. If you spam your attacks then you risk leaving yourself open to the enemy. You have to time your hits accordingly.
During the Remake, you have the ability to play as two different characters, Cloud and Barret. Cloud is the main character you play as and when you get to a certain point in the demo, you can switch to Barret. Using the two characters at the right time is crucial to your survival as Barret is a long-range character and Cloud is the in-your-face type.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Cloud
When you play with Cloud, you have the option to change your stance, which also reminds of Dark Souls where you can use your weapon with either 2 hands or just 1. Once stance that cloud has is called the Predator Stance, in which he moves slower but does a lot more damage to enemies. The different stances also change what attacks Cloud can block.
