On the heels of CD Projekt Red’s Night City Wire episode 2, players got to see a lot of what the world of Cyberpunk 2077 has to offer.
From the beginning of the Night City Wire, we are hit with amazing graphics and an interesting back story that explains how players can essentially mold their own experience when playing as V. As I watched CD Projekt Red explain the mechanics of the game, I couldn’t help but feel my excitement pique the deeper I got into the video.
I thought to myself, “this may be the most ambitious game I’ve seen in a long time.”
What Makes A Game Ambitious?
Before exploring why I feel that Cyberpunk 2077 is the most ambitious game I’ve seen in a long time, let’s dive into what I believe makes a game ambitious.
Out of all the games that have come out over the years, many of which have been ambitious in their own right as they delved deep into brand new premises and expounded on new concepts.
The way we explore open-world games has consistently been improved over the years with games like Zelda Breath of the Wild and Red Dead Redemption 2. We’ve seen graphics continue to reach new heights as developers are given more tools to improve upon our experiences with games like Ghost of Tsushima, which Gritty Gamer has concluded is the best-looking open-world game on consoles to date.
We’ve even seen stories play out in ways that were unheard of in the past with games like The Last of Us 2 and Modern Warfare 2020. All of the games I’ve mentioned above are indeed ambitious and I’m positive you can think of more games that deserve to be mentioned as well, but let’s move on.
By all means, from the looks of it, Cyberpunk 2077 isn’t bringing anything entirely new to the table with the concepts explained in the video. While CD Projekt Red may be able to add their own touch to the already well established concepts we know and love in gaming, what we’ve seen isn’t entirely “fresh.”
So What Makes Cyberpunk 2077 Ambitious
Many of the games that we have come to love in the past have blended elements from previous titles into a new experience. These games are usually solidified as masterpieces by the critics if the different aspects are blended well.
Cyberpunk 2077 is doing the same thing.
When the developers explained the weapons and combat system in the Night City Wire episode 2, we got a first-hand look at the different weapons Cyberpunk has to offer.
The guns in Cyberpunk share a similarity to those featured in the Borderlands series. In Cyberpunk there are power, smart, and tech weapons that players can choose from. Depending on which class of weapons you choose, decides how each weapon behaves when in combat. For instance, the smart weapons are able to go around corners and hit enemies behind cover, much like Atlas weapons in Borderlands 3.
The developers also explained that there are weapons within the game that you won’t be able to get unless you kill specific characters. So, you may come across a likable character who happens to wield a weapon you like, the only way to get that specific weapon would be to pry it from his cold dead hands.
Even the melee fighting style shares some similarities to Shadow Warrior with the first-person sword-fighting.
Cyberpunk promises to offer players a unique experience through life path choices, that will allow you to meld a backstory for your character. This backstory will ultimately decide where you begin in your journey through Night City and how you interact with others in dialogue options.
Players will also be able to explore the vast world that is Night City and the surrounding desert listening to specially curated music specifically for this game. The character design and augmented body parts share a resemblance to Deus Ex and other games that allow you to alter yourself for combat.
Nothing I mentioned above is entirely new, but all these different elements that come together to create Cyberpunk are what makes this game so ambitious.
Why Do I Say Its The Most Ambitious In Seven Years?
Perhaps the most ambitious game I’ve ever played was Grand Theft Auto V. This game perfectly melds:
- Driving similar to midnight club
- Flying better than most games I’ve played
- Golf
- Tennis
- Outstanding shooting mechanics
- Superb Voice Acting
- Beautiful Open World
Across the board, Grand Theft Auto V was a masterpiece. Rockstar didn’t bring any new concepts to the game, but they melded aspects from other games that we loved into something totally new. This gave players a unique experience that we could only get from playing Grand Theft Auto V.
This is why I believe that Cyberpunk will be such an ambitious game. All of the different elements that come together to make this game what it is shows that the devs have thought of everything to make this experience completely immersive.
Despite the fact that this game isn’t out yet, I can still feel the same feelings of excitement that I felt when I saw the trailers for Grand Theft Auto V. Up until now, I haven’t felt that same burning desire to play another game since then. Even though games like God of War and Last of Us 2 have come close, it’s not quite the same.
