Borderlands 3 is the Family Guy of video games.
How did you feel about the title of this article? If you’re like me, you frowned in disagreement before realizing there may be some truth behind this odd comparison.
During my most recent venture in seeking out a new podcast, I came across a podcast that goes by the name of Giant Bombcast. During the 2 hour 30 min long episode, one of the hosts compared Borderlands 3 to Family Guy. The podcaster glossed over the statement without diving deep into how this comparison is plausible. Then I began to think about how this is the case.
A lot of people I’ve heard talk about Borderlands 3 have said a lot of positive things. Still, like most games, there is a lot of negative to go along with the positive. A lot of the negative remarks surrounding Borderlands 3 are understandable. There are plenty of bugs, glitches, and design issues that will frustrate even the most novice of gamers, but I find it puzzling to complain about the humorous dialogue that is the essence of Borderlands.
There are a few things you know you’ll find when you start up a Borderlands Game. A lot of loot, explosions, an abundance of corny knee-slapping jokes that are hit or miss (usually miss). I don’t turn on Borderlands expecting to constantly wipe the tears from my eyes from non-stop laughter, the same goes for an episode of Family Guy.
Every once in awhile I’ll let out a small chuckle from one of the jokes being told, but I’m never dying of laughter.
I like to think of Borderlands and Family Guy as a huge casserole stuffed with as many ingredients as possible. Some ingredients will taste good, while others are ok, but occasionally you’ll come across an ingredient that makes your mouth water every time you think of it.
Pop Culture in Borderlands 3
There are plenty of pop culture references in Borderlands 3. From including a reference to Rick and Morty, which has taken the world by storm with only 3 seasons so far, to making fun of the baristas at a coffee shop. Borderlands 3 crams as many jokes as possible.
This is why I don’t take Borderlands seriously. I can sit back and relax without worrying too much about following the dialogue. Half of the characters you meet are throwaways anyway. It feels like most of them are there simply put into the games as the butt of a joke. Just like Family Guy, you have your main cast and a bunch of other familiar faces that don’t mean much.
So for those of you who feel that Borderlands 3 is too rambunctious and overly humorous, I say that you’re right, but you need to take it all in. A game like Borderlands 3 is rare, so enjoy everything about it. Even those occasional eye-rolling jokes that seem misplaced.
