Fans of Overwatch will be happy to find out that they no longer have to speculate because Blizzard finally reveals Hammond the Hamster’s Origin story.
So, as the story goes, Hammond was a specimen in the same facility that ran tests on Winston, the super intelligent ape. The tests that they ran on Hammond were a bit different than the ones scientists ran on Winston, which is why he is bigger and smarter than an average hamster.
When the primates on the moon began to take over, Winston decided to escape on a ship instead of participating in the uprising and our little furry friend, Hammond, decided to tag along with him. Hammond the hamster crafted a space pod capable of attaching itself to Winston’s ship. Long story short, Hammond’s faulty space pod detached itself from Winston’s ship during flight, leaving Hammond on his own.
Hammond The Hamster was left defenseless, so he put his best foot forward and created “Wrecking ball.” Hammond then enters into the Junkertown arena, where he participated as a gladiator. Thus, Hammond became the most fierce gladiator in Junkertown. There you have it, Hammond The Hamster’s origin story.
Blizzard says that Hammond The Hamster’s origin Story was a bit tricky to come up with. There were a lot of things that they had to take into consideration when creating the character. Hammond the hamster has been in development for years. Blizzard always had an idea of creating a character named “Ball Guy,” but they never knew how to implement him into the game.
Blizzard played with various ideas about how to create this “Ball Guy” character and they got around to putting a hamster inside a ball, which is just brilliant.
“We spent years figuring it all out. A big part of the reason it took so long is that while we do take Overwatch seriously, there is a certain light lightheartedness to the world that we like to embrace,” Adam, lead game producer of Blizzard writes.
Hammond the Hamster’s origin story came together nicely after years of speculation. Blizzard wanted to create a character that made people say “Oh that’s too far,” and it seems like they did just that.
Hammond the Hamster is now live on Overwatch. Jump in and try him out!
